Trained as a documentary filmmaker, Jann worked into the trades as a carpenter, scenic artist and artisan builder. The stories she writes come from a life with her 'bags on' - the smell of the mud as the tide goes out, the weight of a crossbeam notched into place.

I was birdwatching on a salt marsh in the San Pablo Bay when I realized my camera was slowing me down.
